Hi folks a couple of weeks ago we collected a 15HP Petter S type from a long standing enthusiast. The engine had spent it's working life in a brickworks nr Dudley driving a large stone crusher and was rescued for preservation in the early 1980s.
She's a bit rough and was siezed at the piston but seems to be all there, apart from the starting paper holder.
We've been getting some work done to it in the evenings since we collected her and have finally today managed to get the piston freed and the crank out!.
The crank and bearings are going to require some attention as one side has had water in it at some point and has rusted quite badly i will look into getting the crank metal sprayed as a new set of bearings came with the engine.
The flywheels are about the roughest part as they have been in the ground at some time and have rusted quite badly they will need to be
skimmed but i may be hard pushed to find anyone that can swing them in a lathe due to the dimensions of them.
I'm hoping to have it up and running to display at Welland next year.

Gary,
I thought that was going to be a long term winter project...??? Or is it winter in Shropshire now? I knew you would not resist having a fiddle

Glad to see she's cleaning up OK.

Cheers

Dan

Hi Dan your right we could'nt resist :-)
It's nice now that it's apart so we know what we're up against with it.
Will try and get the P type finished before we get to envolved with this one though. we can get it in the workshop proper then :-).

Regards Gary..

3 Weeks. I will be expecting the engine to be running and fitted on a trolley by then

On a more serious note, your piston reminds me of the state my 2PS piston was in when I got it apart. Only one of my oil rings had decided to start crumbling. Tell steve to be patient and they will come off in one piece.

Hi folks just a little update.
Over the last few days i've made a puller to pull the govenor housing off fashioned from an old car hub puller and 3 lengths of M12 threaded rod.
After applying a bit of pressure and plenty of WD40 it started to move. It came off alot easier than i thought. This allowed the bearing housing to be removed!. The crank needs grinding so the next job was to remove the crank weights, the nuts for these are leaded in so the oxy propane torch made short work of that. Once all the lead had melted out the nuts came undone easily. The crank has been delivered to our local engineers for a grind.
I had a couple of spare hours this afternoon and stripped the govenor down, again coming apart far easier than i thought it would have. All that it took was a gentle heating to melt the congealed grease and muck and it was moving.
Then onto the piston rings! Steve had freed off two on our last session. But again with a little heat and some gentle tapping with a toffee hammer the other 3 freed off.
There will probably be no more progress for a while untill the crank comes back in a week or two. although there's plenty of bits to clean off, job for Steve me thinks :-) as I've got the Lister P to finish thats still in primer and trolley less!

Regards Gary..

Not sure what the journel sizes are reletive to the shaft diameter, an engine I did many yrs ago was all parrallel about inch and a half, I ended up having about 60 thou of hard chrome put down in several sessions this avoided all the heat buildup and possible peeling of metal spray on small diameters. This has run now for many years faultlessly. Anybody got any thoughts?

Fortunately, like all Petters I think, the main journals are larger than the governer and flywheel journals. Listers are a single diameter all through and a blasted nuisance for that reason. The one bonus is that their cranks are generally harder than Petters' so that, unless badly abused, most of the wear is in the bearings.

My father used to reclaim engine parts by hard chrome plating so I know it works well in principle. (Don't ask about the chemicals involved !!)

However since chrome is essentially non-wetting I wonder about oil-film in relation to both bronze and whitemetal bearings and in particular about the minimum running clearances and heat dissapation.

A question for Hoyt perhaps?

regards
Roland

I recon you've got enough to do with that 8HP S type of yours, so not to cause you anymore Petter stress i'll have to politely decline :-)
