He always complains that the wood burns when he tries to weld it. Maybe this is the answer?

Regards

.....I've seen a demonstration at The Welding Institute at Cambridge which produced a weld between two pieces of wood:

One piece is held in a fixed position and the second piece is pressed against it and vibrated for a few seconds, the friction causing the lignin in the wood to melt. The movement is then stopped rapidly and a very strong bond is formed without the use of filler material, mechanical fasteners or adhesives.

I don't know if they've developed a commercial use for the process but they do an enormous amount of research into material joining on all scales from micro to very macro.

Pete.

Sounds like a variation of the friction stir welding I saw demonstrated on aluminium at the Welding Institute a few years ago.

Cheers, Gerry.
