Just enjoyed the first part of this weeks Journey covering a part of the country that I love, the Welsh Marches. Micheal Portillo makes a great guide and my folks were reminded of other long lost series. Remember Down Your Way or Six English Towns? or even Fred. Why oh why do we have to put up with innane drivvel for most of the time. Another great series has to be Countryfile although as far as its roots go, I think they have lost the plot, bit like the Archers!

Hope you folks in the West aren't getting blown away tonight. Its starting to howl hear in the South East!

Having been in the Highlands all week I started to watched the Railway Journeys this evening and as usual found them very good. There are few people on the box and radio that I can seriously listen to for ever and Portillo is one, Fred D another and Tony Benn, politics aside, I find one of the best orators that has ever lived. Such an interesting man.

Just watched another episode of this fine series and it struck me how much admiration there seems to be for railway viaducts striding boldly cross the landscape. So why is it that I can't walk into a local shop between Denham and Wendover without being asked to sign a petition against HS2 (I haven't) which will apparently scar the Misbourne Valley and Chilterns forever?

Nick,

The programme is one of the best of its kind in my view, as regards HS2 it is suffering from Nimbyism. People tend only to see or hear what they want to and make the rest up.

When did we all become so anti progress? I'm quite keen on local history and have read about the lengths our forefathers went to to encourage new canals etc to pass through their patch so that the area would reap the commercial benefits - not only trade opportunities, but in my immediate neighbourhood monies raised raised from the sale of common land to the Grand Junction canal Co. funded the building of several new road bridges.
