Joined my pile today.
I've yet to pick up the main lumps but the board and all the small stuff came home today. Its a 1931 6hp Petter S direct-coupled lighting set of 3KW at 110/140vdc. The book says 15 cwt but I suspect a little more.
Pics here: http://www.petternut.co.uk/PetterVS207023engine.jpg

It looks a bit rough but is all there and the bore and bearings seem well.

enjoy
Roland

By spending a lot of time talking to people no doubt, and the fact that Roland is well known as THE man for Petter 2 Strokes.

Still a very nice find and pleased shes gone to the right home.

Just dont mention Allens at the moment

Friend of a friend and a six year wait. Yes I had gathered that Allens was a sore subject. Not your fault I believe.

All things come to he who waits :) I guess thats the reason I got into Hartops after Charles Hudson related his story to me about his very rare ungoverned H type, 10 year wait and an AV in exchange! People today would think him crackers to swap an open crank for a vertical but it completed his collection. You can guess which engine started my collection!

Keep up the good work.

A bit of a journey to collect that one, Roland.

Bizarre that two of these unusual plants should become available at the same time. There can't be too many around.

Its bizzarre how loads of other similar engines pop up together from time to time as well particularly as loads of them were built by the engine manufacturers.

Excuse my ignorance here, the dynamo or is that alternator makes the difference?
If so which is rarer?

Both are dynamos though of different makes. The Ebay one looks like a Mawdsley. Mine is GEC and 110vdc nominal. Actually 110/140 the higher voltage for charging cells to 110.
I've never heard of or seen an alternator (AC generator) version but expect there are some.
Worth recalling that up to WW2 many local generation schemes were DC. Tiverton and Bridport being two local examples powered by large multi-cylinder Atomics.
