Ian Ansell at Sibsey Windmill has been in contact to advise that the stolen Hornsby engine serial No 117971 has been found, and it was as feared found in a scrap yard in Grantham, minus trailer and vertical mill. To make matter worse the flywheel and drive pulley had been cut off the crankshaft. With the crankshaft having being cut right through the engine is now virtually little more than scrap iron. All those involved with Sibsey Windmill would like to thank everyone for their help in locating the engine.

The matter is now in the hands of the Police.

Be interested to know if the Scrappy had records of who dropped it off!

As I mentioned elsewhere; the first one I want to see in jail is the scrappy. There is simply no possibility that he didn't know what was being brought through his front gate. Even if he wasn't aware that it was the Sibsey engine specifically, he should have been imediately suspicious of such an item being scrapped.

I'll bet that the only reason that engine hasn't been recycled into a Kia is because the scrappy got greedy and thought he could make some money from it.

Horribly expensive, but a new crank should be possible...

Martin.

And as was said elsewhere, the scrappy may have been the one who reported it.

Well looking on the bright side at least the engine has been found, now that has to be something !. I agree with Martin it will be possible to make a new crank or possibly repair the old one, It's just a case of time and money. Given its recent history it would be criminal to end up scrapping the engine now, lets not be to hasty to point the finger of blame at anyone's door until the police have completed their investigation.

Cheers, Gerry.

Had a long conversation with Ian from Sibsey this evening...

I withdraw my accusation of the scrappy wholeheartedly! The gent spotted the first few parts of the engine when brought in - when the second load arrived he called the police. Sadly, the flywheel and pulley that were cut off are missing, as are all the non-ferrous parts. There is more, but this isn't the place for it - at present.

Unlikely, I realise, but if anybody knows the whereabouts of an assortment of Hornsby bits, including crankshaft and Flywheel, Sibsey would love to hear from you.

Martin.

I suspect, being a large item that the flywheel was later smashed up and to make each part look as scrap, taken to another site. The bits may turn up yet, but I am afraid I have my doubts.

It is a warning to us all.

You put a blanket ban on discussing the last event, however you seem to be happy for people to post all manner of opinions on this thread, regarding the guilt of parties involved.

Did I?

Seem to remember posting the various requests from the Police but taking the advice of the museum solicitor when it came to those people with axes to grind and large wooden spoons :-)

While there was an ongoing Police investigation it was innappropriate for anything to be published in case it prejudiced the outcome.

As far as the Sibsey engine goes, at this point the only information we have is from the owners of the engine. When more info is available it will be posted if they request it.

i don't suppose they had CCTV on site???? as many down here do,and like in previous posts the scrap yard new what it was and that bit was worth money...all they think about is the money side of it...
if its a proper the scrap yard owner should have the little bas---ds details,as you must have a waste carriers licence that you get from the government, theres a number that on the licence and that can trace the owner of said licence..its been in force for a few years down here, and if you don't have the licence your not allowed to carry scrap about...or on the other hand it mite be mates of his and in that case you mite not catch them..but none the less if the police know there job they should already have chased this up..it must have been a big ish vehicle that took it in the first place..you mite go on local TV and radio to see if anyone saw this going down the road..long shot but it mite pay off...
hope you find them, and when you do chopp there fingers off that way they wont do it again..
regards,mike...

You only need a waster carriers liscence if your are carrying commercial waste. You are well within your right to take scrap from your own garage etc to the scrap yard.

[quote="crapscatter"]So good to see Abott and Costello back together.

I meant to cast no assertions as I was acquainted and dealt with the man myself and only found him true to his word and helpful. I see no cause for rudeness. John
