Interesting. To whom was it sold and when? I doubt there is any definitive information. I suggest taking a flake from a dark corner to a paint factor. Compare with BS 381C chart.

So it might be a Fowler applied red? have you tried asking PT-E (Details in SEM Helpline)?

cheers

There was a photograph of a red 5hp Appletop in a recent Stationary Engine Magazine (can't remember the exact issue off hand). That was in it's original paintwork, and was definitely red and not green. Perhaps Fowler re-painted all the engines they bought in red to match the colour of the smaller Handyman engines they were buying in vast quantities.

Interestingly, my 1.5hp Petter M Acorn Top is a spec VZA / Handyman engine that was also sold to John Fowler in 1931. It is an older restoration, and is currently painted red, but the paint under the red is olive green (I think this may be the original paint). It does make you wonder if Fowlers painted all the engines they bought in red for installation in their cement mixers to maintain a consitent colour scheme.

Is your engine the one featured in this months SEM? That one was a 5hp Appletop used in a large Fowler Cement Mixer. I can't recall the colour of the engine though - I think it may have been red also!

Petter would paint in any colour the Customer requested. Known colours include; green (several shades), black, red, white, several greys, blue and no doubt many more.

cheers

Im not sure if you have a copy of the Petter Oil Engines catalogue re-print produced by David Edgington? If not, I am sure the photographs below will be of interest. The catalogue shows two old photographs of what I believe to be Fowler Cement Mixers powered by a 5hp Petter M (see below).

10 cu ft capacity drum cement mixer powered by a 5hp Petter M (Appletop I suspect from the the photographs in this months Stationary Engine Magazine) featuring a power loader and automatic water tank:

Had a look through my magazines last night - it was the January 2012 issue incase you're interested.
