Having looked at the pictures of the others in this thread, no sign of governors on them? Is this a reason for the timing case, and the somewhat homemade magneto mounting? I believe Stuart used a combined belt driven governor/carburettor on some engines, would this have been available for the W2?

Matt G

Hi Matt,

AFAIK, as the W2/W4 were casting there were sold as engine only and you would then have to source a magneto and carburettor, that style of carburettor was fitted to the P3 (and earlier models) and had 2 fixing bolts, AFAIK I dont think Stuart made a push fit carburettor to fit a stub, the Carburettor on the Stuart N1 was threaded into the barrel.
Yours seems to have had a attempt to govern the engine.

Cheers Steve

I'd like a W4 as a comparison with the Hartop H type.

Im quite curious on how the Hartop 2 stroke (FE?) compares to the like of the Stuart P4, Villiers WX11 and Scott SE, I have never see one except for the odd photo.

In terms of engineering the FE is very crude, plain gunmetal rod and on early ones mains too, lubricated by wick oilers. Later ones did have ball-race mains. Crank is supposedly balanced! Carb is a bought in jobbie and in my opinion too big for the engine. They have a tendancy to fire the crankcase mixture when off load.

If you want to see one in the flesh, get your A*** down to the SEAMS New Year crank up on the 2nd and I'll bring along my static one for you to look at.

Thats a pity, Pauls place is good to have a look at. We do have another Christmas bash on the 27th, bit nearer too at Kingsfold, Surrey with the S&KWSEG. A small gathering but friendly bunch. Pat will most probably bring along his FE as seen at GDSF.

Seems a bit harsh. A mate of mine is just starting work having completed one year of an aeronautical engineering course. Shift 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off plus hols! At 17 he will be earning as much as I have ever done in 24 years!!! Oh and its got nothing to do with aeroplanes either.

Steve, No good looking, If you want to get in to Dorset you need to be applying 1st Jan. Not sure how they would take someone appearing for a few days? Most likely a No Thanks. Perhaps Martin P. will be able to advise better.

See I do 3 night 3 days 6 off and every 5th cycle I get 21 days off, so am expected to organise my life around that, the money isnt great either!

Ah, my uncle is looking at going as well, so maybe he could take an engine of mine for the 1st couple of days.
