A new thread to gather evidence for and against. I'm quite happy to be corrected and to publish the evidence posted here in SEM. My starting position is that I've never seen an original Lister or Petter paint scheme that included red flywheels (or other details picked out prissily in red) on a green engine. I do accept that the red/green scheme was used by some OEMs.

I'm sure that a little effort expended on collecting data would establish each OEM's colour. I'd be glad to gather up what gets posted here. Lets say for pre-war Lister and Petter sold to an OEM only: sale date, serial, colour, OEM.

Perhaps those with pre WW2 engines with red flywheels could establish whether that colour is original. I suggest by a good look/dig in the balance weight drillings or other cranny.

cheers
Roland

hello roland..

dont know about petter but Lister did have an unattractive but practical paint scheme for the WD during WW2 on the JP gensets. This was army green with major controls highlighted in red and, as far as i know, the flywheel rim highlighted in red on some models.

Problem is nobody has ever seen an original unmolested WW2 JP3 or JP4 genset that has not had several paint jobs over the years. I am also uncertain if Lister did the red paint in works or if the army did it upon receipt. Maybe David Harris might know as he started at Dursley (I think) in 1945.

regards,
gerry

And the GK2 I mentioned was 1947. The red paint I found on that one, as I said, was on the back of the flywheel in some fairly inaccessible places.

I do not doubt the existence of red flywheels pre-WW2. I still say I've seen no evidence for them unless applied by an OEM or a later restoration. I suggest that J has had a "restoration" - have you checked in the balance drillings?
The military have a long history of not painting things red unless on leave :-)

cheers

Please excuse the diversion but can you give an ish estimate as to what I should have paid for for a c.s ,very similar to marshall-man's pictures. The seller wanted £400 and I declined and went and bought the Petter for just over half that figure. Was I wrong to walk away from it? It appeared complete, not seized but quite rusty.
Cheers
Ewan

the chap who has got the cs paid £60 last year for it
the j with the L in the back ground i paid £30 each form welland sale 2 years ago
red is the only colour on the flywheels and the green you see on the engine is the only green.
me and the chap who owns the cs were thinking maybe engines that had red flywheels were to be used with in "public reach" so to denote danger to those who came close ?

That pink is typical of debraded lead paint but the serial is post WW2.
