The recent post about keys and bad repairs begs the question of whether we should work to different standards depending on the use of the engine.
Most of the "repairs" which are shown have worked for some time, many for a long time. A number will have been carried out when the engine was perceived as being old and almost worthless. The fact that they worked means the design criteria of "keep it going for now" was met.
What would (have) we do on old machines?
I suppose the bigger question is when to scrap a machine given that anything can be rebuilt - at a cost? Should the decision be dictated by current market value or replacement cost? That is delegating the decision to the perception of others but is frequently followed.

John, If it is all about final value of the engine deciding how much the restorer spends on the engine ,then there would be few engines restored.

Hi John,
Are you an accountant? You are quite correct with your observation of keeping some nearly worthless piece of kit working versus the ROI ( return on investment) of a new one. Fortunatly accountants can't have hobbies because they are not able to put a value on preserving our heritage / job satisfaction of a restoration challenge. Possible ROI is keeping us out of the pub but that somtimes fails :D
If a cheap bodge works for sometime it's a good investment. For most of us that does not supply the required, priceless satisfaction.
Cheers
Ewan

John isn't an accountant, just someone who wields a long-handled spoon similar to Martin's :-)

cheers

I think John means when the engines were used commercially? We tend to forget they were tools that had to earn their keep and had a limited commercial life. John
