Hi Guys,

I have been thinking about this for some time.
If you have a decent sized engine driving a dynamo, say over 10kW, how do you put it to use?
Running lights off it is hardly practical and because our lights are in the same circuit as the rest of our equipment, the DC power is rather useless.
If you can get your hands on a decent amount of cheap (waste) oil, it might be an idea to power heating coils and dump the heat in the central heating along with the cooling water of the engine.
Any other ideas?

Hubert

Hubert when you get it sorted out be sure to post so I can load mine. My other S Petter runs so much nicer with a small load applied.

Hi Butch,

I certainly will.
I think this is really important, because it gives us a reason to save dynamos from being scrapped. Most of them are really beautiful machines and extremely well made, but if they serve no purpose and with the price of copper, they'll sadly but understandably end up being scrapped.

By the way, vintage dynamos and generators contain less copper than people usually think. Their weight of copper is relatively small compared to their iron weight.

Regards,

Hubert

Hi Butch,

Is that just an engine, or a genset as well?

If you have mains voltage DC you can convert to AC using the same converters that are fitted to all the solar panels on so many roofs, they must be readily available and cheap enough as they use standard inverter technology :?:

hello again Hubert,
Look down this page about 3/4 the way and find my post about it. It is another odd one.

Here...viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3285

Until I saw this I hadn't realised Petters did such a version.

Hi Butch,.

Sorry I missed that. Very nice engine you've got there.
If you want a load for that, I was offered a very nice dynamo from the USA a little while ago.
Would look very good on that. I can give you the details if you are interested.

Cheers,

Hubert
