Madisson Kipp Oiler - 12HP Horizontal S Type

I am the custodian of a rather nice 12HP horizontal S type engine, fitted with a two-port Madisson Kipp mechanical oiler. This is my first engine fitted with a mechanical oiler, so I’m perhaps looking for a little reassurance.

The engine (currently) runs unloaded at around 350rpm for show purposes and the mechanical oiler drips at about 1 drip every 5 seconds. But I note from the S Type operators manual I have here that the rates are much, much higher.

Does anybody have any accurate information as to at what rate I should be oiling at, as the figures in the manual seem rather excessive - although I do know that oil is cheap, bearings aren’t!
I have a nice steady ‘drip’ of oil from the exhaust pot drain cock whilst the engine is running and I get a small amount of oil manually ejected from the crankcase drain every hour or so.

Assuming the rate needs increasing, how is this archived on the Madisson Kipp 30 Oiler I have?

    Many thanks for any advice.

What is the date of the manual you have?

So for a Calibrater. You need the 1926 version which can be downloaded here.

Thank you......Hmmmmm....still says 24 drops per min for the big and small ends and 45 drops per minute for the cylinder. Just seems a lot.....but then again, there is a lot of moving metal inside to keep oiled. Given I am only running at 350rpm unloaded, I could ramp these figures back a little? I think a little tinkering with a screwdriver is on the cards. There do appear to be two 'adjusters' on top of the lubricator.

That downloaded manual you refer to above Roland is for a 1926 model - I think mine is 1923. Still shows the calibrator and not the Madisson Kipp lubricator.

Confusing as I have a 1926 manual here. Also your horoizontal was erected in 1923 but returned and "brought up to date" in 1927. If you look at it using "dating" rather than record search the records are presented in chronological order and I gave you the order nos.

Just checked the 1926 manual which makes no mention of a Calibrater.
