After 10+ years I have finally had my Petter M Handyman running at shows again :)

The only issue I am facing now is, before I restored the Petter she must of had parts from a Petter Light Set added onto her, from the looks of original red paint and some green.
She runs VERY fast with no load, I presume the Governor springs are too strong and cause the engine to keep a fast rpm, on a trolly this engine will bounce and vibrate.

Will adding weaker springs slow her down?

I am looking for springs made for a Petter M that keep her steady and slow at shows with no load put onto the engine.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

Petter M Handyman (VZA?) 1.5 HP Serial: 4169 Early 1920+ ish model?

You found some history on my engine a while back when I was having cranking issues that you solved for me!

Edit: Found the history you got for me. http://www.internalfire.com/petter-arch ... erial=4169

Rated speed is 750rpm. Have you had a tacho on it?
Try removing one spring and see if that makes a difference. Before that remove both springs and with the engine not running check that the governor has full travel and closes the butterfly completely when the weights are fully out.

Thanks for the advice, I will get to removing one spring, I doubpt these springs have been changed since 1928!

I think it was running a light set at one point in its life? But when I restored it over 15 years back, she was not connected to anything, but evidence showed she was tank cooled because of a cracked hopper and the old tank plate on the top.

The springs for a 1.5hp engine are the same whether tank or hopper-cooled and whatever she was driving. Springs and speeds differed for the range of HP within the VZ. Approx 1-2bhp.

At one point she was driving a Petter Light Set. Confirmed by checking documents I got 10+ years back when picking up from a old farm :)

Like I said it made no difference to the springs. 1.5 hp @ 750 rpm whatever.
