Unless you can arrange it you will struggle to get in on those days as the passes and helpers pass allow access on the days prior to the Wednesday as no movements allowed during the rally.

Here is a graphic comparison between Hartop H type and Stuart W4 and Hartop FE and Stuart W2. Physically and power wise the Hartop products are bigger being rated at 1hp and 1 1/4hp respectively whilst the Stuarts are rated at 1/2hp each.
Looking again at the W4, I can see why this is such a rare engine as it must have suffered the same problem as the H type. With both being derived from their 2 cycle bretheren, sharing a close fitting crankcase and therefore small sump, it would be quite easy to run low on lubricating oil.

Thanks for the pictures, the stuart looks especially bad for sump level.

    Matt,

The one I had at Dorset belonged to Mark (Numpty1) who loaned it to me for the year, recently returned via SEAMS Crank Up, the other was one row back from you facing the other way. If I remember correctly it was blue.

In a way I wish I didnt sell my Hartop, but lived in the back of my car as I lived in the Block and the inspection they found it didnt go well....

Would like a 2stroke one to go with my Scott, but the way Cristin is at the mo I may not have another engine, I blame pregnancy hormones...

I thought you were looking at a 4 stroke to fit in with your collection?

Collection has been stripped back, My Uncle wanted to start again so I donated the Hopper Cooled 2 stroke and 4 stroke (he really owned the Sattley so couldn't say no...) so technically I could use a water cooled 4 stroke, as I only have 2 air cooled atm, but I cant see anything coming up at a price I can warrant, just had to pay out on a double pram, new car seat and now a new cot! I was offered a JAP MF but the price was the issue.
I got something cheap im keeping my eye on...but still SWMBO is giving me evils.
I would be quite happy with a shed of 2 stokes.

    But we can all dream.....

The other one was indeed blue and a 2 stroke! Look at the article in the comic to see a picture of it. Matt, I think you will join a long list of folk wanting a Hartop 2 stroke, they're a bit rare hence you don't see them that often.

Well, I have found some time to work on the W2 and it is now running nicely. I can confirm that the carb goes on the straight cut port and the exhaust on the tilted one. I am now working on the cooling system and the fuel tank.
Here's what it looks like in its new Sunday suit:

I'll post some more when the skids, cooling tank and fuel tank are finished

Thanks to everybody who helped me.

Has anyone got a base casting (like the one in Jims photos) please for this engine. I can give it a good home.......

    Thanks,

Found a bit more info on the W2 and W4

    1/2 BHP, Bore and stroke 2.5" (57mm) 147cc

The W2 was also available air or water cooled, funnily enough known as the A2, Both engine were only sold as Castings or Fitting Kits.

Also goes to prove the N type was introduced before 1932 and believed, as the P3 which is mentioned was removed from sale in June 1928 and the P4 introduced April 1928. This would put the W2/4 as being introduced around 1928.

Also reference the small oil capacity of the W4, a sight feed oiler is mentioned for the W4.
